Garhwal was formed in the 15th century, when king Ajai Pal merged the 52 separate principalities, each with its own fortress. For 300 years, Garhwal remained one kingdom, with its capital at Srinagar (not to be confused with the capital of Kashmir). The early
medieval history of Kumaon is the history of the Katyuri dynasty. The Katyuri kings ruled from the 7th-11th century over large areas of Kumaon, Garhwal, and western Nepal. Uttranchal, now known as Uttarakhand became the 27th state of India on 9th November, 2000 . Uttarakhand borders Tibet to the north, Nepal to the east, and the states of Himachal Pradesh in west Uttar Pradesh in the south. The region is traditionally referred to as Uttarakhand in Hindu scriptures and old literature, a term which derives from the Sanskrit for Northern Country or Section. In January 2007, its name was officially changed to Uttakhand on the demand of a large section of its people. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun which is also a rail-head and the largest and most modern city in the region.
